Choose Automotive
21 August 2023
This month the National Franchised Dealers Association are running a campaign called “Choose Automotive”, outlining the possibilities and opportunities within the motor industry to GCSE and A-level exam students
The aim is to make more people aware of the varied jobs and careers available in the automotive industry and debunk any old misconceptions. This falls firmly alongside Sytner Groups values as we pride ourselves on developing talent and building careers, in addition we are committed to creating equitable environments where everyone is supported to be their best self.
In light of this we spoke to Recruitment Coordinator Emily Weaver about her journey into the motor industry.
“Having spent several years working within estate agency I was ready for a change and a new challenge and coming across an advertisement for a Trainee Service Advisor offered me exactly that. I knew I was capable at providing great service to customers and I knew I had my own interest in cars so I had nothing to lose!
I’d always known of Sytner Group as a brand growing up with two dealerships nearby and I knew of the reputation Sytner had, so thought this might be a perfect entry for me into a great company and I was right.
I was lucky enough to get the job and spent the following couple of years (interrupted by covid-19!) completing my Apprenticeship qualification alongside invaluable on the job training and first-hand experience in the role! The training provided by the BMW Academy provided me with all the skills and theory to thrive in my new role whilst also having the support of a mentor style trainer for the duration.
On site I was given the opportunity to gain some experience in several departments including warranty and parts, within MINI as-well as BMW. Besides the experience I gained and the support I received to grow my career from the business, I was welcomed into a close knit team of colleagues who were more than willing to help me right from my first day! Some of which I have since built meaningful, valuable friendships with away from the work environment.
After 4 and a half years spent in the world of Aftersales I came across my next opportunity within Sytner Group as a Recruitment Coordinator. As I’d began to explore my interest in the internal functions of the business it became apparent that I could transfer the skills I’d learnt in my roles in Aftersales.
Having now been with the business for 5 years I’m loving my new role and getting involved in other brands within Sytner Group and I am excited for what the future has in store. In my opinion beginning my journey with an apprenticeship was the best way to start and gave me all the skills and knowledge I needed to succeed.”
